Tutors agency offers solution to concerned home-schooling families regarding US university admissions and validity of a GPA obtained during home education
A recent report by Stanford University's Hoover Institution highlights the adoption of policies specifically for home-schooled students by US colleges and universities. Adam Caller, founder of Tutors International, explains the implications for hiring reputable home schooling tutors

OXFORD, UK, December 19, 2008 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A recent report published by Stanford University's Hoover Institution describes how American colleges and universities have adopted admissions policies designed specifically to deal with the increasing number of applications from home-schooled students. Adam Caller, founder of Tutors International, explains why higher education institutions are taking these measures and what parents need to do to ensure their child is not disadvantaged in the higher education system as a result of home-schooling. "The core concern for colleges when dealing with applications from home schooled students is the validity of the student's GPA," explains Adam. "Whilst all applicants sit the SAT exams and can be selected on that basis, it only forms part of the selection process and is considered along with the GPA. When evaluating the applications of home-schooled students, there are often concerns about how credible a GPA is when awarded by the child's own parents, or accredited tutor, who could have been over-generous. In comparison, when an applicant's GPA is supplied by a school, colleges are confident that the score is a result of standardized evaluation with no possibility of bias."

"There is a solution to this," Adam reassures. "To remove any concerns about higher education admissions, home schooling parents need to ensure that their child has sat exams that are accredited by a universally recognized body, such as the WASC or EASC organizations. When we supply tutors to home-schooling families, it's on the understanding that their child will be enrolled in a distance learning program accredited by these bodies, ensuring that the GPA obtained by the student under the guidance of our tutor is just as reputable and valid as any obtained by a state-schooled student. The home-schooled student can still have the flexible, enriching educational experience that many families strive for," Adam concludes. "It just has to be planned carefully to ensure that there is no doubt about a student's ability when it comes to university application time."
