Home schooling families must prepare for the chance their child may want to take university entrance exams, warns founder of private tutors agency
Adam Caller, founder of Tutors International, a leading private teaching agency, urges home education families to plan ahead for the eventuality that their child may want to attend university, and therefore must be able to cope with standardized mainstream exams.
/Home Schooling News Articles/ - Oxfordshire, UK, August 21, 2008 - Tutors International announces a trend in requests for full-time live-in tutors from families that have teenage home educated children who want to attend university. In some cases, home schooled children have not taken any kind of formal examinations, and so the need to prepare for A-level or university entrance examinations can necessitate the employment of a private tutor. Adam Caller, founder of Tutors International comments; "Home schooling is more widely accepted now as a viable alternative to traditional school attendance. However, we have had several enquiries from home educating families about how best to prepare their teenage child for the rigors of university entrance exams, or SATS and A-levels, when the child has had no experience of formal testing whatsoever."
Adam continued; "I'm not for a moment saying that home education is unable to prepare a child for university, or disadvantaging them in any way, far from it. The vast majority of home schooled children that I have met personally have been bright, articulate and knowledgeable, usually with excellent social skills. I would just like to urge home schooling families to plan ahead for the eventuality that their child may want to take exams in preparation for university, sometimes in subjects that the family may not be able teach or explore alone. When the fact that the child may never have been tested formally in their life is added to the mix, the family can suddenly feel out of depth and that's when they tend to call us."
When asked what a home educating family in this situation should do, Adam replied: "Realizing that help is needed as early as possible is very important, especially for home schooled children who haven't taken any external examinations. This is because there are skills such as timed essay writing that the child will need to acquire in order to demonstrate knowledge in standardized examinations. We have a lot of experience of working with home schooling families, therefore we know how best to prepare students that have not had any experience of exams, so choosing the right private tutors agency is also a must."
